I love going to the movies!!! No really… I love the movies. So I was pretty freaked out when I received the famous “mouse feces in popcorn” e-mail. First I freaked out because my husband and I had literally gone to the movies the day before and had, of course, eaten gobs of popcorn. Then I freaked out because “holy !#*! what will we do if they shut the theatre down!” After all, it is just down the road from us.
Well, I have to admit after I took a few deep breaths and gave it some thought I found myself a little skeptical about the e-mail. It sounded like there was some truth to it… but like there was also a bit of exaggeration. My gut told me that some in house gossip and an unhappy employee might have mixed and created a tangent that was at least a little over done. Thus I decided to wait and find out what the Bulletin Reporter (who jumped right on the story) uncovered. Here is the link to what she wrote: “mice in the popcorn”.
I have to admit. I’m still a little grossed out. I’m disappointed that there is as much truth to it as there is, however, I do believe the now infamous e-mail was a bit over dramatic. The bottom line is that I’m still going to go to the movies at the Old Mill…but I won’t be eating the popcorn (it’s never been that good anyways).
I hope you will all take the time to read this report and then make your own decisions. Maybe we’ll all save a bit of money on our nights out to the movie now that we will think twice about buying the overpriced popcorn. Not much of a loss in my opinion.

Who can afford to go to the movies AND eat popcorn? I wonder what the BendBubble2 would say...take out a second mortgage to see Transformers and get two sodas and large popcorn?
I received the email and decided against publishing it and even after reading the bulletin's article I'm still not really caring.
Will I get popcorn next time I'm at the theatre? Maybe. That oil tempurature in order to pop popcorn in those machines is like 400 - 460 degrees. Of course it would be vomit enducing to take a bite of rodent droppings....ugh....
Ok, it's gross, thats all there is to it. But I doubt that the Theatre is the only place in town that has issues. 10% of food service places in the 500 facilities in Deschutes county? Thats 50 places people. FIFTY. What are the odds that you've been to one of those fifty? I'm sure I have....oh lord!
Seriously, I turn a little green when I think about all of the mice feces that is apparently hanging out in the Bend eateries. For the two days following the “mouse droppings” e-mail my stomach got to rolling. I told my husband and extended family I was sure I had some sort of mousy type of disease…;) Mouse poop is just plain gross.
But really, who expects a movie house popcorn machine to be clean? As for the whole pulling the mouse out of the kernels and popping the rest, doesn’t that sound a little dramatic? Who would do that? I can’t imagine that anyone would go that far. Besides aren’t most of the theatre employees sixteen? This totally sounds like something teenagers would put together.
The bottom line is that I believe that the Old Mill has had some mice scurrying around. I’m sure there has been some poop in the corners, but I would bet that if any employee found poop in the kernels, they would at the very least throw them all out….right…? Ok, my stomach is turning again…what sorts of diseases do the mice carry? Wasn’t there a mouse based plague or something?
Maybe I have the plague.
I received this email too and was glad I didn't get popcorn when my husband and I saw Harry Potter days before. Yuck! I guess I'll continue to smuggle in our own snacks...
