Silence

Not 20 minutes ago I found out that my mother has breast cancer...

I don't know what to say.

It's so quiet here.

Annette-

I was just going to email you about kids activities this summer then saw your post about your mom.

I live in Ireland, a Yank married to an Irishman and I am going to Bend for the summer with my girls aged 4 and 5 to be with my mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January. My parents retired to Bend about 2 years ago now from the east coast, so it has been hard for mom to go through chemo and everything without her longtime friends, though she is making great new ones there in Bend. Poor dad needs a break and they both want to see the grandkids, so we plan to spend all summer getting to know Bend.

My thoughts are with you and your family. It really sucks, it isn't supposed to happen to your own family, I was in shock for a while with the news, and made a trip in April on my own to help out, but now we are bringing over some grandkid therapy.

My mom is still in the middle of it, but there is a group called the Navigators which has helped her figure a lot of stuff out about treatments and meds. If your mom is being treated in Bend I'm sure she'll receive the same great care that my mom is getting.

Because I know my mom will need quiet time, I want to figure out swimming pools and kids activities for the summer and can't really figure it all out. If you could help out with any suggestions that would be great.

My thoughts are with you.

Hi Cathi,
Thanks for sharing. I'm still sort of stunned. My mom is still sort of stunned. It sounds like it is going to be a long year for all of us. She will be getting most of her treatment in Seattle where both of my sisters live, so I will be traveling there quite a bit.

As for summer activities, have you checked out True North yet (www.truenorthparenting.com). There is a calendar of events and directory on the site that can help you find almost anything you need. I am working really hard to keep it up-to-date. Check it out and let me know what you think.
